Hangman Words

2 player hangman

Hangman was always a two person game: one sets, one guesses. Set your word below and either send the link or hand over the phone.

Letters and spaces only. Three to forty characters.

Two ways to play

Send a link

Type the word, make the link, and send it however you normally send things. The person who opens it gets your word and six guesses. The answer travels encoded inside the link, so it is not readable in the address bar and it never reaches a server, which also means we cannot see it and cannot get it back for you if you lose it.

Pass the phone

Set the word, do not open the link yourself, and hand the phone over. The guesser sees only blanks. This is the version that works at a table, in a car, or anywhere the other person is sitting next to you.

Setting a good word

The temptation is to pick something nobody has heard of. It almost never works, because a guesser who gets a foothold will finish an unfamiliar word anyway, and a guesser with nothing on the board is not enjoying themselves.

A better word is an ordinary one built from letters nobody opens with. The score shown as you type measures exactly that, and the best words page has four sets picked by situation if you would rather borrow than invent.

If you would rather not set one

Take turns on the daily word instead. It is the same for everybody, so you can both play it and compare how many wrong guesses it took without either of you having to think of anything.

Questions

How do you play 2 player hangman online?

Type a word, press the button, and send the link. Whoever opens it plays your word with six guesses and never sees the answer, because the word is encoded into the link rather than shown in it.

Can two people play on one phone?

Yes, and it is the older way. One person sets the word here, hands the phone over without opening the link themselves, and the other guesses. The screen shows only the blanks.

Do we both need an account?

Neither of you needs anything. There is no signup, no room code and no server holding the game. The link is the game.

Can I use a phrase rather than one word?

Yes. Spaces are kept and shown as a gap between word groups, which is a genuine clue for the guesser and makes phrases play quite differently from single words.

Can I see whether my word is too hard?

The score appears as you type. It measures how much of the word a standard opening gives away, so you can tell before you send it whether you have set a fair round or a massacre.
