This site is a word game and a set of word lists. Nothing on it is advice, and the numbers on it measure one narrow thing.

The difficulty score measures spelling

It counts four properties of a word's letters and produces a number. It does not know whether the guesser is eight or eighty, whether the category was announced, or whether everyone at the table happens to work in the field the word came from.

A word rated hard can fall in three guesses to somebody who has seen it before. A word rated easy can defeat somebody having a bad evening. The score describes the word, not the round.

The solver returns possibilities, not answers

It searches a standard English word list for everything matching the pattern you give it. It has no idea which of those words your opponent actually chose. A short list of matches is a shortlist and not a solution, and the recommended next letter is the one that narrows the field fastest rather than the one that is certainly right.

Proper nouns are excluded from the dictionary, so the solver will not find names, places or brands. If the word you are chasing is one of those, it cannot help you.

Word lists and accuracy

Clues are written to be useful in play, not to be definitions. They are short by design and they simplify. If a clue is actually wrong rather than merely brief, the contact page is the fastest way to get it fixed.

The theme

Hangman is a classroom game with a grim name and a grimmer drawing. If that is a problem for your group, the game works exactly the same if you replace the figure with anything that builds in six steps, and the how-to-play page suggests a couple.

The site is supported by advertising. Advertisers have no input into the word lists, the scores or anything written here, and there are no ads inside the game, the solver or the create tool.
