Hangman Words

The best hangman words

There is no single best list, because the right word depends entirely on who is guessing. These four sets are filtered from 1792 scored words by situation, and none of them was chosen by hand.

The mistake almost everyone makes

Reaching for something obscure. It feels like the clever move and it is usually the weak one, because obscurity only bites at the very end of a round. A guesser who has eight of eleven letters will get there whether or not they have heard the word, and a guesser with nothing on the board will not.

What decides the round is the opening. Everybody starts with E, A and R, and a good hangman word is one those letters miss. That is a property of spelling, not vocabulary, which is why ordinary short words keep beating impressive long ones.

Words that look easy and are not

The best category of hangman word there is. Everyone at the table recognises the thing instantly and the letters give nothing away, so the round is genuinely hard without feeling unfair.

Choosing your own

The create page scores whatever you type as you type it, so you can check a word before you set it. If you want the full ranking rather than four curated sets, the hard list is sorted by score, and the hardest words on the site shows the top of it with the working attached.

For a themed round, the 24 category lists each carry their own easy, medium and hard sections.

Questions

What are the best words for hangman?

It depends who is guessing, which is why this page sorts them by situation rather than into one list. The general rule is that a good word is one a standard opening does not touch: short on the letters people try first, short on vowels, and without repeated letters that reveal several positions at once.

Are obscure words good hangman words?

Rarely. Obscurity only matters at the very end of a round, when a guesser has most of the letters and has to recognise what they are looking at. Everything before that is decided by spelling, so an ordinary word made of awkward letters beats a strange word made of common ones.

What is a good hangman word for adults?

Something from the first list here: a short, everyday noun whose letters happen to be terrible for a guesser. Adults expect the difficulty to come from vocabulary, so a word they know instantly and cannot crack is the one that lands.

How were these chosen?

Filtered from 1792 words by the site's difficulty score plus one extra property per group, such as length or vowel share. Nothing here is hand-picked, and the formula behind the score is published in full.
